How to Compare Rosemary Essential Oil Batches Before Buying in Bulk

Comparing batches is a routine part of rosemary essential oil quality control for purchasing and QC departments. Two samples sharing the same trade name do not necessarily have identical characteristics. Before approving a supplier, it pays to set up a repeatable method that links analytical results to the intended application.

Start with a shared specification

Define the botanical name, expected origin, extraction method and the relevant acceptance parameters. Rosemary may be listed as Salvia rosmarinus or under its historical name Rosmarinus officinalis. Also document the appearance, odour and any other physico-chemical parameters that matter for your process. Without this reference, any comparison ends up being subjective.

Compare documents and real samples

Request a certificate of analysis linked to the batch being offered and, where appropriate, a GC/MS report. Check that the batch number is consistent across containers, samples and documents. Assess the odour under comparable conditions and carry out laboratory tests or pilot trials according to the end use. Differences between laboratory methods can limit how directly percentages can be compared.

Consider the risk of a batch change

In continuous production, the supplier may deliver a different batch from the one originally approved. Agree how changes are notified and when a new sample is required. It also helps to agree on packaging requirements, protection during transport and goods-receipt checks. An oil that is compliant on paper can still deteriorate if it is stored poorly.

A documented purchasing decision

Record acceptances, reasons for rejection and corrective actions. Involve formulation, quality and purchasing before the first significant order. A supplier’s transparency and ability to answer technical questions are practical indicators of a sustainable supply relationship.

Tip: compare the total cost of supply and technical conformity, not just the price per kilogram.
