Rosemary Oil Chemotypes: Cineole, Camphor and Verbenone in Purchasing

The term rosemary oil chemotype describes a chemical variant within a single botanical species. For businesses this distinction matters: an essential oil can be sold under the same trade name and still have a different aromatic profile. Anyone who builds a formula around a specific raw material should therefore check its composition, not just its label.

Botanical name and chemical profile

Rosemary is now botanically named Salvia rosmarinus; Rosmarinus officinalis remains a widely used older name. Trade documents often refer to cineole, camphor or verbenone types. These labels indicate characteristic constituents, but they do not replace binding limits or a batch analysis.

Why the differences matter in formulation

Composition influences the scent character, the sensory effect and, in some cases, the technical suitability of a formula. A hair-care manufacturer, for example, has to consider odour, stability and the assessment of ingredients that may need to be declared on the label. A buyer for fragrance compositions may have different priorities. Claims about medical effects have no place in a technical raw-material approval.

A practical approval process

First define the profile you need. Then request a batch-specific GC/MS evaluation, a traceable botanical identity and the relevant technical documents. Test samples under real conditions of use. For repeat orders, compare new batches with the documented initial approval and settle any deviations in writing.

What to look for in a bulk quotation

The quotation should state the quantity, lead time, packaging, origin and the test documents available. The lowest price per kilo is no advantage if the material later fails to match the approved formula. A transparent specification makes a long-term supplier relationship easier to plan.

Conclusion: not every rosemary chemotype is interchangeable for every industrial application.
