Rosemary Powder Particle Size: Choosing the Right Grade for Industry

Rosemary Powder Particle Size: Choosing the Right Grade for Industry

For a seasoning manufacturer, rosemary powder particle size can matter as much as its aromatic profile. A powder that is too fine for a process can be difficult to handle; one that is too coarse can change the texture of the finished product. The right choice therefore depends on the application and the equipment, not on a single definition of “fine powder”.

How is particle size characterised?

Professionals usually describe a particle size distribution rather than a single size. Depending on the equipment and the need, the analysis may rely on sieves or another suitable method. The specification should state the measurement method, the acceptance criteria and the actual form of the powder. Two suppliers can use the word “fine” for very different distributions.

Consequences for food blends

Particle size affects homogeneity, flow, dosing and mouthfeel. In a dry blend, large differences between ingredients can encourage particles to separate during transport. A pilot trial on the same equipment as production makes it possible to observe the practical properties of the batch.

Essential complementary checks

A satisfactory particle size does not guarantee overall compliance. The buyer must also consider botanical identity, moisture, microbiological requirements, foreign matter and the contaminants relevant to the destination. Traceability must link the analytical results to the batch actually delivered.

What to request in a call for tenders

Specify your application, the planned quantity, the type of cut or grind, the expected control method and any packaging constraints. Request a sample for an industrial trial before approving a large order. If a process change alters the particle distribution, a new qualification may be needed.

Purchasing tip: include measurable criteria in the specification rather than descriptions such as “extra-fine powder”.
